Duties and responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Chief, Food Quality and Standards Service and the immediate supervision of the Senior Officer of the Food Quality Liaison Group, Food Quality and Standards Service, the incumbent will draft technical papers and assist in the planning, organisation and implementation of expert meetings on critical food safety issues primarily as they relate to microbiological hazards in foods.

In cooperation with other agencies, in particular WHO, plan, organize, and implement technical meetings and expert consultations on risk assessment of microbiological hazards in foods and finalize the reports and technical documentation for publication, including eliminating any incongrous, irrelevant or reduntant material and re-writing texts to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with FAO's standards, policies and practices.

Develop and maintain a data base on risk assessment of microbiological hazards in food.

Develop training material and participate in the conduct of training courses on microbiological risk assessment.

Prepare background information and draft technical papers for discussion and/or publication on food safety and microbiological risk assessment.

Liaise with other relevant international, regional and national organizations working in the area of food safety and microbiological risk assessment.

Perform other duties as required.

 

Qualifications and experience - Essential

Advanced university degree in food microbiology, food science, food technology, veterinary science, public health or university degree in any one of these fields supplemented by specialized courses in food microbiology.

Five years of responsible experience on risk assessment of microbiological hazards in food.

Working knowledge (Level C) of English, French or Spanish, and limited knowledge (Level B) either of the other two.

Ability to analyze technical issues, to write clear and concise reports and ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Maturity, initiative, tact and a high sense of responsibility. Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. Ability to organize effective work procedures. Computer literacy and ability to use word processing, database and other standard software.

Qualifications and experience - Desirable

Experience in providing information on risk assessment on microbiological hazards to developing countries. Basic knowledge of models used for risk assessment of microbiological hazards in foods. Limited knowledge (level B) of another language of the Organization.

 

Level P-3 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$ 46445 to US$ 59770 (without dependents) and from US$ 49756 to US$ 59990 (with dependents).
