DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Chief, KCCM and the direct supervision of the Chief, Interpretation Group, will:

  • Interpret both simultaneously and consecutively into French from English and Spanish, occasionally from French into English and, if qualified, from one of the Organization's other languages*, or from German, Italian or Portuguese.
When not interpreting:
  • Translate into French from English and Spanish and, if qualified, from one or more of the Organization’s languages*, a wide range of documents (including technical and background papers, reports, publications and correspondence);
  • Perform lexicological research work relating to FAO terminology, and in particular assist in the compilation of specialized multilingual glossaries for interpreters' use at FAO meetings in consultation with experts and in collaboration with the Terminology & Reference Group;
  • Carry out performance evaluations of French free-lance interpreters;
  • Assist in the recruitment process of free-lance staff and in the management of interpretation teams servicing meetings at HQs and in the field;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:

  • Diploma from an internationally recognized interpreter/translator school and/or relevant University Degree
  • Five years’ relevant experience in simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, of which at least three years in an International Organization and some experience in translation. (M.Sc. or equivalent postgraduate degree in interpretation/translation may be substituted for one year of the required experience)
  • Excellent knowledge of French and English and professional working knowledge of Spanish

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret accurately and fluently
  • Relevance of experience to the stated duties
  • Demonstrated ability to translate texts of idiomatic quality comparable to the original composition
  • Relevance of academic qualifications
  • Extent of terminological knowledge of FAO’s fields of activity

Please note that all candidates should possess computer/word processing skills and should be capable of working with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments.

* The languages of the Organization are: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish
