DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general guidance of the Chief, TCEO and the FAO Subregional Representative for Southern and Eastern Africa and FAO Representative for Zimbabwe, under the direct supervision of FAO’s Emergency Coordinator for Zimbabwe, and in full collaboration with other colleagues of the Emergency Coordination Unit, the Coordination and Information Officer will:

  • manage the Coordination and Information Unit (subunit of the Emergency Coordination Unit);
  • maintain and develop relationships with officials of NGOs, Government Institutions, donors and UN Agencies in relation to coordination both at field and headquarters (Harare) levels;
  • develop and discuss plans with the FAO Emergency Coordination Unit (ECU) to strengthen coordination within the agriculture sector amongst different stakeholders (non governmental organization [NGOs], Government of Zimbabwe [GoZ], United Nations [UN] agencies, research institutes, donors);
  • participate in and contribute to the Agricultural Coordination Working Groups and subworking groups;
  • contribute in the identification of technologies/approaches for application in the Zimbabwean context, develop plans for dissemination and implement them;
  • assist the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) Head Officer in the definition of key variables to monitor on food security and technologies, the development of strategies to disseminate M&E findings and in liaison with stakeholders;
  • develop work plans for production of information materials relevant to the unit and contribute to, and supervise, the overall production of these documents (journals, newsletters, CDs, bulletins);
  • prepare project proposals, mid-term reports and final reports;
  • prepare project updates as request by FAO regional and HQ officers (monthly, by-monthly, etc);
  • manage, update and develop the agricultural database. Assemble information from FAO and NGOs regarding current and planned interventions in agriculture;
  • analyse data from the agricultural database, needs assessments and vulnerability surveys to be used for coordination tools and updates;
  • produce, update and share information products required to facilitate humanitarian decision-makings (Global Information System [GIS] maps, presentations to the Agriculture Coordination Working Group [ACWG] and other fora, etc.)
  • assist the operations and project officers in the preparation of assistance plans (geographical targeting, identification of areas, etc).
  • perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:

  • University degree in Agriculture, Economics or a related field
  • Five years of relevant experience in coordination, management, monitoring, evaluating and analysis of data in the agricultural sector including some in emergency relief situations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:

  • Relevance and level of academic qualifications
  • A master degree in a field related to development studies would be an advantage
  • Extent of professional experience in coordinating information though databases and meetings with other humanitarian and development stakeholders
  • Relevance of experience with the United Nations system and/or with emergency humanitarian assistance programmes, preferably in Southern Africa
  • Demonstrated leadership, managerial, and inter-personal skills
  • Demonstrated analytical and communication skills in English
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, analytical capacity and proficiency with computers
  • Familiarity with the geographical region.
