Job Profile: Systems Support Officer (P-2) Duty Station Rome
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general supervision of the Senior Officer, ICT Infrastructure Management Group and the direct supervision of the System Support Officer responsible for Operating Systems Support & Operations, the incumbent will provide technical support in ensuring efficient performance of operating systems (UNIX/LINUX). In particular, he/she will:
- Assist in maintaining and testing system software, system utilities, database management system software and associated software packages in order to determine and resolve systems and user problems;
- Provide technical assistance to users and documentation of procedures;
- Participate in the planning and implementation of disaster recovery and security;
- Assist in monitoring and tuning system performance;
- Assist in updating system software and procedures to implement hardware, operational and application systems changes;
- Participate in improving and/or developing new systems and operations procedures;
- Assist in the installation of servers and peripherals;
- Assist in preparing technical workshops and training of computer operator staff and/or users;
- Participate in evaluating and justifying the acquisition or upgrade of state-of-the-art hardware and software products and in determining the application of new technology;
- Participate in feasibility studies;
- Perform other related duties, as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- University Degree in Computer Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics or a closely related field of specialisation;
- Three years of relevant experience in system administration and support of Unix (HP/HP-UX, SUN/Solaris and Linux) in a multi-user environment, support of servers peripherals and support of network based services and applications;
- Working knowledge of English and Russian. Limited knowledge of French or Spanish would be an asset.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
- Relevance of experience in, and knowledge of, software and hardware products related to UNIX/LINUX platforms (HP/HP-UX, SUN/Solaris and Intel/Linux Red Hat), including Storage Area Networks (SAN), backup systems (e.g. DataProtector, Backup Exec) and WEB application open source software (e.g. Apache, Tomcat);
- Extent of ability in working independently with a minimum amount of supervision;
- Depth of aptitude in solving problems in a timely and tactful manner;
- Knowledge of Oracle and/or MYSQL RDBMS and networking (LAN/WAN and TCP-IP);
- Extent of language skills.
