General service staff - General information

FAO normally has no vacancies in the General Service category for external applicants. However, occasionally FAO requires short-term assistance (which could last from a few days to few months). FAO general service staff are secretarial, clerical and administrative staff, including, but not limited to: secretaries, clerks, guards, nurses, software trainers and building technicians.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Secondary school education or equivalent in vocational training
  • Relevant work experience
  • Reside within the Rome commuting area
  • Working knowledge of one of the FAO languages (English, French or Spanish) and limited knowledge of one of the other two*
  • Flexibility, ability to work under pressure, clerical and typing skills, as needed for the job
  • Software skills (e.g. MS Office, Excel, etc.) as needed for the job
  • Ability to work productively and harmoniously with people of different national and cultural backgrounds

*With a working knowledge of a language, you will be expected to work independently using the language required, to prepare a variety of written communications (correspondence, reports, working papers, etc), to participate actively in meetings and in work-related discussions, etc.
  With a limited knowledge of a language, you will be expected to follow work-related discussions or meetings, even though you may wish to intervene in another official language. You will be expected to participate in simple conversations, to use the telephone, to read and understand work-related texts and to write simple communications, etc.
