IDB AND FAO STRENGTHEN COOPERATION TIES IN AGRICULTURE, RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

Rome, June 26 -- The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization today signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen their cooperation links.

The document, signed in Washington by FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf and IDB President Enrique V. Iglesias, highlighted their long and fruitful history of institutional collaboration.

Under the memorandum of understanding, the FAO will post a member of its professional staff at IDB's headquarters in Washington, D.C. to serve as a liaison between the UN agency's technical divisions in Rome, its regional office in Santiago, Chile and the Bank's technical units working in the areas of agriculture, rural development and natural resources management.

The IDB and the FAO will assist each other in identifying and preparing projects as well as in drafting sectoral and thematic guideline documents at a regional level.
