FAO DIRECTOR-GENERAL JACQUES DIOUF NAMES THREE WOMEN TO SENIOR MANAGEMENT POSITIONS
Rome, 21 January 2000 - Dr. Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), named three women to senior management positions in the largest specialized agency in the UN system, the organization announced today.
Dr. Diouf who was re-elected to a second six-year term last November, is continuing reforms that he began during his first term, including improved gender balance at the UN agency by appointing more women to senior management positions.
Appointed to the post of Assistant Director-General, Agriculture Department is Ms. Louise Fresco of the Netherlands, formerly the Director of FAO's Research, Extension and Training Division. Ms. Fresco previously served as an expert and project manager, regional agricultural development project in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo). She is a Professor, personal chair, at Wageningen Agricultural University, the Netherlands.
Ms. Carleen Gardner of Jamaica was named Assistant Director-General, General Affairs and Information Department. Ms. Gardner was formerly Director of Personnel. Before joining FAO in 1998, Ms. Gardner was Deputy Director, Office of Human Resource/Bureau for Planning and Resource Management at the UN Development Programme.
Ms. Kay Killingsworth of the United States was appointed Assistant Director-General ad personam as special advisor to the Director-General for the World Food Summit Follow-up. Ms. Killingsworth was the Secretary-General of the 1996 World Food Summit.
As Assistant Director-General for Fisheries Dr. Diouf appointed Mr. Ichiro Nomura of Japan. Previously, Mr. Nomura was Director, Far Seas Fisheries Division in Japan's Fisheries agency in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Mr. Henri Carsalade of France, Assistant Director-General, Sustainable Development Department, was named Assistant Director-General, Technical Cooperation Department. Before joining FAO in 1994, Mr. Carsalade was Director-General of Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement (CIRAD).
Mr. Ram Badan Singh of India was appointed Assistant Director-General, Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific. He was previously Chairman of the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board in New Delhi.
Mr. Michel Savini of France was appointed Assistant Director-General ad personam. Mr. Savini joined the Cabinet of the Director-General as Assistant Directeur de Cabinet in 1992 and in 1994 became Directeur de Cabinet.
