HYDROGRAPHY

Figure 2 shows the temperature in the surface layer registered by a thermograph during the survey, and Figure 3 shows the hydrographic feature from one section worked perpendicular to the coast.

Both the surface temperature chart and the section show clear evidence of upwelling along the coast. Between Ras al Hadd and Ras Mabber temperatures below 15°C were observed close to the shore. This area showed the strongest upwelling, and the phenomenon gradually decreased northwards In the hydrographic section. Figure 3, the isolines of temperature, salinity and oxygen content can be seen rising towards the shore. The 1ml/l oxycline is located at 450m depth and the shelf beyond 20m depth are penetrated with water with oxygen content <2ml/l. This is assumed to be even stronger manifested southwards towards Ras Mabber. The cold oxygen deficient water likely forms a barrier for some of the fish species in the area and its inflow on the shelf probably induces a seasonal migration pattern synchronized with the monsoon wind system.
