ABSTRACT

©FAO This paper presents an overview of government policy in relation to drought relief and rural adjustment assistance in Australia. The discussion on the role of government in this regard is based on economic efficiency and market failure principles. It is relevant, however, to note that this policy relates to an agriculture sector that is commercial, rather than subsistence, in nature, and that it is part of an economy that is underpinned by a general social welfare system.
