2 March 2012, Rome – Director-General José Graziano da Silva today welcomed the Mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, to FAO Headquarters.
The Director-General and the Mayor discussed ways in which FAO could be more active in the Roman community, including opening up the Organization to visits from local schools, universities and other institutions.
In a symbolic gesture to open up the Organization to the city, Graziano da Silva gave Alemanno a permanent building pass to FAO.
During the meeting, Graziano da Silva also thanked Alemanno for the Roman and Italian generosity and hospitality demonstrated in hosting the Organization and the Mayor offered his full support to FAO's new Director-General.
This was their first official meeting this year, but they had met before, in 2003, when Graziano da Silva visited Italy as the Brazilian Special Minister of Food Security and the Fight against Hunger and Alemanno was Italy’s Minister for Agricultural and Forestry Policies.
