World Food Day

16 October

Every year on 16 October, World Food Day is observed in more than 150 countries.  On that day, news articles and opinion pieces focus on hunger and related issues.  Schoolchildren write essays and design posters.  Symposia, debates and ceremonies are held.  Candlelight vigils, footraces , fundraising concerts and sporting events take place.

The theme of World Food Day in 2008 is:  "World Food Security and the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy".

Events

Raising awareness about hunger mobilizes energy to find solutions.  A campaign of concerts, sporting events and other activities harnesses the power of media, celebrities and people like you in the fight against hunger.

USD22 million raised

Television drives, concerts and other events around the world have brought in over USD 22 million so far.  Since 1997 when public fundraising began, 100 percent of all donations has been used to pay for small-scale projects that help poor families produce or buy more food.
