FAO Regional Conference for Africa (ARC)

’The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to increased concern with Members participating in international meetings. In light of the recent developments, at the request of the Africa Regional Group, and in consultation with the Government of Zimbabwe, the Director-General has decided to postpone the dates of the 31st Session of the Regional Conference for Africa to the second half of 2020. The decision is taken to ensure a higher level of participation of ministers that will lead to a successful Regional Conference’’.

"Promoting Inclusive Agribusiness and Regional Integration for the Attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals"

The FAO Regional Conference for Africa is convened under the provisions of Article VI-5 of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Constitution. It is a biennial meeting and open to all Member Nations in the FAO Africa Region, to Representatives of the United Nations Bodies and Specialized Agencies, Intergovernmental Organizations, Civil Society Organizations and Observers, States outside the region, including: Canada, United States of America, France, Netherlands, The United Kingdom and Holy See.

The 31st Session of this Conference will be held at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe at the kind agreement of the Government Zimbabwe.

Functions of the FAO Regional Conferences include:

  • Forum for consultation on all matters pertaining to the mandate of the Organization within the region, including any special issues of interest to the Members in the concerned region;
  • Forum for the formulation of regional positions on global policy and regulatory issues within the mandate of the Organization or having implications in respect of the mandate and activities of the Organization, including with a view to promoting regional coherence on global policy and regulatory matters;
  • Advice on and identification of special problems of their respective regions and priority areas of work which should be taken into account in the preparation of the planning, programme and budgetary documents of the Organization and suggest adjustments to these documents;
  • Review and advise on the plans, programmes or projects carried out by the Organization which impact upon the region;
  • Review and advise on the performance of the Organization in the region in contributing to the achievement of results against relevant performance indicators, including any pertinent evaluations.

Several topics relating to the Theme of the Conference “Promoting Inclusive Agribusiness and Regional Integration for the Attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals”, will be discussed and recommendations formulated for implementation by FAO and its Member States.
