Concept Note on Non-State-Actors participation in the ICN2
The Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) is a high-level ministerial meeting that will bring together senior national policymakers to propose a flexible policy framework to address today's major nutrition challenges and identify priorities for enhanced international cooperation on nutrition. Addressing malnutrition will require a multisectoral approach with participation from a range of stakeholders, including intergovernmental organizations, civil society, non-governmental organizations, researchers, the private sector and consumers. It is necessary to mobilize the knowledge and capacities of all different stakeholders to generate a political consensus to promote nutrition as a priority in the global development agenda.
In light of the above, the Governing Bodies of FAO and WHO have requested that both agencies ensure consultations with all relevant stakeholders, including other United Nations organizations, nongovernmental organizations and the private sector. By creating a more inclusive process for policy development, FAO and WHO will ensure greater participation, transparency, and increased ownership of decisions made during ICN2. With this in mind, the two Organizations have developed a road map to allow Non-State-Actors (NSAs) to make contributions to the conference. Engagement with NSAs will take place throughout the entire process of ICN2, including pre-conference web consultations and informal meetings, as well as participation in roundtables and side events during the conference itself.
