Biographies of student representatives

Alícia Gomes, University of São Paulo, Brazil.

Alícia is an undergraduate student in Nutrition at the School of Public Health, University of São Paulo. She is passionate about food security and nutrition issues on both the domestic and the international fronts. In her current work, she focuses on issues concerning food sovereignty and the human right to adequate nutrition which are key elements of Brazil’s and South America’s nutrition and health agenda.

Andrée-Anne Côté-St-Laurent, Roma Tre University, Italy.

Andrée-Anne pursues a master in Human Development and Food Security at Roma Tre University. She also is a Canadian journalist and her life goal is to become a pillar in the area of food security in order to help people. She wants to be able to influence governmental decisions and raise awareness about food, water, poverty, and agriculture and environment problematics.

Camilla Warren, Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (HiOA), Norway.

Camilla is a master’s student in Public Health Nutrition at HiOA. Her main areas of interest are global nutrition, food systems and food policy. She is very enthusiastic about sustainable agriculture on which she has got a practical experience through a recent internship in a small-scale farm in North Carolina, USA. She is involved in international student fora and recently attended the 2014 Nordic World Health Organization Simulation (NorWHO) in Copenhagen, Denmark.

David Abana, Ghent University, Belgium.

David holds an MPhil in Molecular Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens from University of Ghana and a BSc degree in Laboratory Technology from University of Cape Coast. He is a regulatory officer at the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) Ghana and is in charge of microbiological analysis on food, food processing companies’ inspection, small scale farmers and producers training on safe food handling and preparations. He is currently part of an International Training Program on Food Safety, Quality Assurance and Risk Management at Ghent University.

Elma Kontor-Manu, University of Ghana, Ghana.

Elma holds a BSc in Nutrition and Food Science. She is currently pursuing her master’s in Food Science at University of Ghana. Through her research, she hopes to bring a new phase in the Ghana Dairy Industry by helping small-scale dairy farmers and processors meet Ghanaian and international standards as well as consumer demands. Her goal is to help changing young students’ mind-set to view farming as a business by providing them with relevant entrepreneurial skills.

Emily Callahan, Ghent University, Belgium.

Emily is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Nutrition and Rural Development at Ghent University. After completing her bachelor’s degree at Harvard University, she worked around the world as a project manager creating economic and investment reports on emerging economies. She has resumed her studies in order to combine her knowledge and interest in global politics and development economics with her passion for food and nutrition. Her current research focuses on the dietary use of local biodiversity to improve human nutritional status.

Manal Tbatou, Chouaib Doukkali University, Morocco.

Manal is a PhD student in Nutrition and Food Sciences at Chouaib Doukkali University. She also holds a degree of engineer in Food Industry from the ‘’Institut Agronomique et Vétérinaire Hassan II’’, Rabat, and a M.S. in Mediterranean and Tropical Agricultural Engineering from ENSIA-SIARC, Montpellier, France. For her PhD research she currently works on the development of sustainable potential dietary values of some wild plants from the rural area of El Jadida, center of Morocco.

Orion Kobayashi, Freidman School, Tufts University, USA.

Orion is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Food Policy and Nutrition at Tufts University. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relation, Economic Development from University of Delaware. He also works as a Consultant and Contractor. His work consists in researching for start-up market size, and consumer demographic data, registering companies and applying for Small Business Innovation Research grants.

Watcharaopol Khoonin, Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University, Thailand.

Watcharaopol is a PhD student in Nutrition at Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University. He is also working as the head of the Nutrition Unit in Chulabhorn Cancer Center. His work consists in providing food service and nutrition therapy to support medical treatment plans. He looks forward to learning more about sustainable food system and on other country practices, to get a better understanding of the international situation and be able to share the experience and knowledge in Thailand.
