Support for South Sudan as new member and new country -- Director-General

22 June 2013, Rome, Italy – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva has promised to support South Sudan, a new member of the Organization , in all possible ways.

“We have to explore every possible way of supporting South Sudan, not only as a new member of the Organization but also as a new country,” the Director General told Nhial Deng Nhial, South Sudan Minister for Foreign Affairs,  and Betty Achan Ogware, Minister for Agriculture and Forestry Cooperatives ,when they met yesterday. 

FAO is already involved in policy development, capacity building and support to government offices in South Sudan. FAO’s 38th governing Conference admitted South Sudan, along with Brunei Darussalam and Singapore to membership on June 15.
