FAO Director General and ECOWAS representative discuss important steps forward for food security in Western Africa

FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva meeting Marc Atouga Lapodini, Commissioner for Agriculture, Environment and Water Resources (ECOWAS) @ FAO headquarters.

7 October 2013, Rome- The Commissioner for Agriculture of the Economic Community of Western African States (ECOWAS) Marc Atouga and FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met today in Rome to discuss the development of their partnership. With the self-funded opening of the Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food (RAAF), ECOWAS is now collaborating with the Organization to implement the Spanish funded project that supports the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) and its Regional Agriculture Investment Plan and the German funded West Africa Hunger Free project, both launched last month in Lomé, Togo.

While expressing FAO’s concern for the hunger situation in the Sahel, the Director General showed his appreciation for the adoption of ECOWAS’ regional food reserve strategy for humanitarian purposes. The ECOWAS Commissioner also asked for FAO Director-General support for the launching of the Regional Food Reserve.
