Director General of FAO and Senegal Minister call for action on Sahel initiative
1 November 2013, Goree Island, Senegal - Director-General of FAO and Minister for Environment and Aquaculture of Senegal Mr Mor Ngom discussed the need for coordination and action for the Great Green Wall to become a reality, during an official visit which included a trip to historic Goree island. The Minister and regional counterparts have undertaken coordination of the initiative.
They discussed environmental issues in Senegal and the National Green Works Programme with support of FAO in partnership with UNDP, GEF and the EC.
The Director General committed to support the initiative and recalled the partnership to organize a regional workshop to discuss those issues as well as a study on the establishment of a community nature reserve in the area of the Great Green Wall (GGW).
In addition, the Director-General confirmed that FAO will continue its support to the National Agency for Aquaculture (ANA) through its own TCP resources and will also assist in identifying other sources of funding.
