Graziano da Silva meets with Oman’s Undersecretary for Agriculture
26 February 2014, Rome – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met with the Undersecretary for Agriculture of Oman’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Ahmed bin Nasser AlBakry at FAO headquarters today.
Graziano da Silva congratulated the Undersecretary on his recent appointment and expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome received during his recent visit to Oman.
He noted the great potential that he observed in the fisheries and aquaculture sector, which he said can play a crucial role in overcoming the challenges the region faces.
“We wish to further strengthen the already excellent cooperation with FAO through long-term programmes in agriculture and fisheries and scale up technical cooperation and capacity building,” the Undersecretary said.
He underlined the positive outcomes of the Near East Regional Conference Senior Officers meetings, which will be followed by a Ministerial Meeting on 27 and 28 February. “I believe that bringing attention to water scarcity in the region and debating FAO’s Regional Initiative on Water Scarcity can have a very positive impact once we reach the implementation phase,” he said.
FAO and Oman are currently working on formulating a National Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development: “The outcome of the strategy would have an added value in the agricultural sectors with the proposed and expected investment plan for 2016-2020 and it should provide a road map for the sector until 2040, said the the Undersecretary. ”
The Undersecretary reported on Oman’s ongoing preparations for the ninth 5-year plan for 2016-2020. The Strategy’s investment plan will be used for the national development plan.
At the meeting, Graziano da Silva underlined the importance of the regional office in the Near East and the need for strong sub-regional offices.
