5 de Diciembre 2012, Roma, Italia – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva has welcomed the decision by the governing Council to observe the 5th of December as World Soil Day.

The day will serve as a platform for raising awareness on the importance of soils for food security and ecosystem functions.

The day has been commemorated unoffically since 2002, when it was adopted by the International Union of Soil Scientists. The date was chosen to honour King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand and his work in promoting conservation of soil resources.

The Council endorsement will, if accepted by the FAO Conference and the UN General Assembly, make World Soil Day an official UN day.

“The sustainable management and use of natural resources is a key to food security,” said FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva. “Despite the essential role of soils in the life of humanity, their degradation is increasingly due to inappropriate practices, growing population pressures and inadequate governance.”

“For some time now, we have known that it can take up to one thousand years to form just one centimeter of soil. And yet, all of that can be lost in just a few minutes, to degradation and erosion,” he said.

Within the framework of its Global Soil Partnership, FAO advocates for international recognition of the importance of soil. The Partnership launched today the Sate of the Art Report on Glboal and Regional Soil Information, its first technical report.

In the area of soils, FAO also provides technical and policy support and compiles and analyzes relevant information, producing, for example the Soil Map of the World.
