El Director General se reúne con el Embajador de Buena Voluntad de la FAO Carl Lewis
26-09-2012 - New York, USA - The Director-General met with FAO Goodwill Ambassador Carl Lewis in New York to discuss future opportunities to continue the former Olympian world champion’s activities in promoting the cause of global hunger eradication.
The meeting took place against the background of the 60th Session of the UN General Assembly, attended by Director-General Graziano da Silva and Carl Lewis who was participating in a press conference for the presentation of the annual Future Policy Award for 2012.
This year’s Award, bestowed by World Future Council, partnering with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and FAO, with support from the Okeanos Foundation, was given for the policy which best contributes to the conservation of oceans and coasts for the benefit of current and future generations.
Carl Lewis was nominated FAO Goodwill Ambassador on 16 October 2009, on the occasion of the annual commemoration of World Food Day.
Since that time, Carl Lewis has worked actively with FAO to promote the cause of food security. In June 2011, for example, he travelled to Haiti, promoting the FAO initiative on Fruit Trees for Haiti. The project is one of a number of initiatives providing emergency assistance to agricultural production in support of earthquake affected and other vulnerable families through smallholder reforestation, agroforestry and water resources development.
