Improving FAO-Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation cooperation

22 June 2013, Rome, Italy – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met yesterday with Christopher J. Elias, President of Global Development, Sam Dryden, Director of Agriculture Development, Stephen Landry, Director of Multilateral Partnerships and Josh Lozman, Deputy Director of Global Policy and Advocacy from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

They discussed the possibilities for improving cooperation between FAO and the Gates Foundation in areas such as statistics, especially for natural resources, advocacy, and relations with civil society and the private sector.

They also exchanged views on their strategic plans for the next years. Graziano da Silva commented on FAO’s  Programme of Work and on the Organization’s five strategic objectives, and Mr. Elias explained that the Gates Foundation is focusing on less issues to be more effective. He noted that the Gates Foundation has designed a long-term strategy for its work with agricultural development.
