FAO reconfirms support for Niger food security strategy

Graziano da Silva meets Minister of State for Agriculture of Niger

FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva meeting Abdou Labo, Minister of State for Agriculture, Niger at FAO headquarters.

10 October 2013, Rome – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva reconfirmed FAO’s support for Niger’s food security strategy during a meeting with Niger Minister of State for Agriculture Abdou Labo today in Rome.

Niger introduced its 3N (Les Nigeriens Nourissent les Nigeriens – Nigeriens Nourish Nigeriens) Initiative in 2011 to increase the country’s resilience to food crises and reduce poverty through agricultural reform, inspired by Brazil’s Zero Hunger approach.

Graziano da Silva expressed his satisfaction at an increase of Niger’s national budget allocation for agricultural development, which now surpasses the 10 percent minimum requirement of the Maputo Declaration endorsed by the African Union in 2003. The increase will be used to help strengthen the 3N Initiative and the ministry of agriculture through monitoring and evaluation activities and policy and programme impact assessments.

The Director-General also praised the presentation of Niger’s Prime Minister on the renewed partnership to end hunger in Africa during the High Level Meeting of African and international leaders in Addis Ababa on 1 July.
