Graziano da Silva meets with Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development
30 January 2014, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met with Mahboub Maalim, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), on the sidelines of the African Union Summit.
Graziano da Silva and Maalim discussed the importance of building institutions for better support to farmers and pastoralists. In this regard, the leaders spoke of a platform IGAD created to encourage exchange of information, innovation and best practices between the public and private sectors, including farmers and pastoralists.
Maalim thanked FAO for its support both in terms of expertise and technical cooperation projects. The two leaders discussed the Country Programming Papers to end drought emergencies in the Horn of Africa that were prepared for all IGAD member countries, as well as the Regional Programming Paper and the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).
The Executive Secretary also praised FAO’s contribution to the IGAD Drought Disaster Resilience and Sustainability Initiative (IDRISI) priority intervention for Sustainable Environment and Natural Resources Management in the Horn of Africa.
The Director-General mentioned youth issues in the Horn of Africa as well migration to neighbouring countries.
The two principals agreed to work together on proposals to support youth employment and increase resilience in the Horn of Africa.
