DG lauds Georgia for hunger achievements

Georgia among 18 countries to have succeeded on two hunger targets

16 June 2013, Rome, Italy - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva congratulated Georgia’s President Mikheil Saakashvili on his country’s achievements in fighting hunger during a bilateral meeting at FAO Headquarters today.

Georgia is one of the 18 countries to have met both the first Millennium Development Goal (MDG1) of halving the percentage of hungry people in their populations,  and the more stringent World Food Summit (WFS) target of halving the number of  their undernourished. Georgia,  which achieved the MDG objective well ahead of the 2015 deadline, was among 38 countries which received certificates of recognition at a ceremony at FAO today.

Also discussed at the meeting was Brazil’s Fome Zero (Zero Hunger) programme, which pulled 40 million people out of poverty through innovative social protection and cash transfer programmes, including support to families with children and education grants.
