Mandela’s birthday to be a food security and nutrition event

Agriculture Minister invites Rome-based agencies to South Africa

19 June 2013, Rome –  The upcoming birthday party which South Africa is preparing to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday next month will be a thematic event on food security and nutrition, FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva was told.

The news was given to him by South African Minister for Agriculture and Forestry Tina Joemat-Pettersson when the  Director-General enquired about Mandela’s health during a meeting  yesterday. The South African statesman will be 95 on 18 July. 

During the meeting, Joemat-Pettersson underlined South Africa’s wish to engage in South-South cooperation  with FAO and the other Rome-based agencies. She extended an invitation to visit her country to Graziano da Silva as well as the Heads of  IFAD and WFP.
