26 March 2014, Tunis, Tunisia – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva warmly thanked the Congolese Minister of Agriculture and Livestock and outgoing Chair of the 28TH Regional Conference for Africa Rigobert Maboundou for the outcomes achieved during his term and for having helped the Organization to focus in terms of priority, commitment and delivery. The two met on the sidelines of the sessions in Tunis.

Graziano da Silva expressed his satisfaction in view of the interaction between Minister Maboundou and his counterparts, which led to a “very successful regional conference”.

“It is a record in terms of attendance,” he said.

The FAO chief also thanked the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Congo for his work with his colleagues in Rome.

Both discussed the Africa Solidarity Trust Fund that was established following President Denis Sassou Nguesso’s proposal during FAO’s 27th Regional Conference for Africa held in Brazzaville in 2012.

They praised the countries that have already contributed to the fund and commended the work of the steering committee, which has approved six projects to be signed during the regional conference.

They also discussed the next African Union summit, which will focus on agriculture. Both underlined the importance of having ministers for agriculture in the region providing ideas to heads of state.
