13 June 2014, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met today with Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, Rauf Hajiyev, to discuss ways to further develop cooperation, in particular, in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

Director-General highly commended the dynamic of cooperation with Azerbaijan after the regional conference in Baku and particularly in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

He noted with satisfaction the country’s new membership in the Central Asian and Caucasus Regional Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission (CACFish) since March 2014, which aims to promote the development, conservation, rational management and best utilization of living aquatic resources in the region.

Deputy Minister Hajiyev thanked FAO for vital and long-standing assistance since 2010 under the on-going Central Asian Regional Programme for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, financed by the Government of Turkey (FishDev). He listed tangible results achieved so far, including providing training for over 100 national experts, developing legislation, strengthening capacities, and improving health of fish stocks.
