FAO Director-General meets President of Congo

Graziano da Silva and President Sassou Ngesso discuss the prompt implementation of the Africa Solidarity Trust Fund

FAO Director-General with the President of the Republic of Congo.

27 June 2014, Malabo, Equatorial Guinea - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met with Denis Sassou Ngesso, President of the Republic of Congo, during the African Union summit in Malabo.

The President congratulated the Director-General for the prompt implementation of the Africa Solidarity Trust Fund, which was established during the Africa Regional Conference in Brazzaville in April 2012.

“In the last two years the fund was established, six projects were signed in Tunis during the FAO Regional Conference for Africa, and 26 countries signed as beneficiaries during the African Union Summit,” Graziano da Silva said.

Sassou Ngesso commended FAO for its valuable input in building solidarity among African countries.

The Director-General thanked the President especially for his role in helping to build peace in the Central African Republic (CAR). The President assured Graziano da Silva that the governments of Central Africa are fully committed to supporting CAR in building peace and food security.

The President asked FAO to continue its important work in providing people with support to farm and grow food, thereby reducing the number of people who become displaced. Sassou Ngesso said that this has led to important discussion on why agriculture is important, why it should not be neglected, and the role it can play in encouraging youth to remain in rural areas and fostering peace.

The FAO Director-General praised the Republic of Congo’s Presidency of the Regional Conference for Africa over the past two years and the commitment of its Minister for Agriculture, Rigobert Maboundou, who has been supportive of recent FAO reform, including decentralization.

The President renewed his commitment to FAO and asked for continued support. He thanked the Director-General for his vision and for his contribution to the African Union Summit.
