Director-General congratulates Togo on hunger progress

Togo President thanks FAO for support

16 June 2013, Rome, Italy - Togo President Faure Gnassingbé met with FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva in Rome today and thanked him for FAO’s support in the successful efforts to halve the level of hunger in his country.

Togo is one of 38 the nations which received certificates of recognition for their achievements in hunger reduction at a ceremony at FAO Headquarters today. Togo has met the first Millennium Goal of halving the percentage of hungry people in their populations.

Graziano da Silva congratulated the President on his country’s achievement and assured him that FAO will work closely with Togo to reduce food price volatility. President Gnassingbé, on his side, said Togo will need continued support from FAO as it moves to strengthen the capacity of the smallholders and give them increased access to markets. He added that he wants to encourage all other African countries in their own efforts against hunger.
