Yemen is a high-priority country for FAO – Director-General

Important to strengthen country’s food security

20 June 2013, Rome - The Director-General met with H.E. Farid Ahmed Mogawar, the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation of Yemen. The Minister expressed his country’s support for the reform process undertaken by the Director-General and congratulated him on the progress achieved. The Minister also referred Director-General’s visit to Yemen earlier this year and noted the resulting progress made in relations between his country and the Organization. 

The Minister touched upon the current challenges facing his country, in particular an invasion of Tuta Absoluta that has decimated tomato crops and the looming danger of locust infestations. The Director-General reiterated that Yemen is a high priority country for FAO, and expressed his satisfaction with ongoing collaboration. He also stressed the importance of continuing joint efforts with the country and other international organizations to strengthen the agricultural sector and improve food security in Yemen.
