FAO Director-General in Abu Dhabi - “Food and agriculture is for everybody”
22 January 2014, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – FAO Director-General, José Graziano da Silva, met with His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces and with His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nhayan, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the UAE during his visit in Abu Dhabi (UAE).
The meeting was an opportunity to share views on FAO’s work in the region. “Some people think that the Gulf Cooperation Council does not need FAO. FAO is about food and agriculture and food and agriculture is for everybody," said Graziano da Silva during the meeting.
Graziano da Silva also participated in the Blue Economy Summit (19-20 January, Abu Dhabi) attended by heads of state, environment and fisheries ministers, and other key stakeholders. The goal of the meeting was to discuss how to utilise the Blue Economy as a tool to shift development in small island development states (SIDS) and coastal states towards a sustainable development trajectory, building on the Rio+20 consensus.
