Graziano da Silva meets with the President of Senegal

January 2014, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met with President of Senegal Macky Sall on the sidelines of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The two leaders discussed the Senegalese President’s tenure as Chair of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), to which he has just been elected.

Sall and Graziano da Silva discussed the implementation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), for which FAO has worked closely with the NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency (NPCA). The Director-General also renewed his commitment to continue supporting the CAADP agenda under the Senegalese President’s chairmanship.

The two leaders also discussed the importance of sustainable agricultural production in Senegal, in particular of rice.

The President asked FAO to continue supporting the seed capitalization programme of the Senegalese Ministry of Agriculture.

Graziano da Silva also praised the President’s social protection programme, “Bourses de securite familiale”, that was launched in December 2013.

The programme is inspired by the Brazilian Bolsa Familia conditional cash transfer program and receives technical support from FAO.

Finally, the two principals discussed the International Year of Family Farming as well as the Year for Agriculture and Food Security for Africa. The Director-General encouraged the President to participate in activities to promote family farming.
