3 April 2014, Bucharest, Romania – At a meeting between FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva and Edmond Panariti, Albanian Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Water Administration, the parties agreed on strengthening FAO cooperation with Albania and jointly starting the process of opening a fully-fledged FAO office in Tirana.

The meeting took place on the margins of the 29th FAO Regional Conference for Europe, which is the Organization’s regional governing body.

The Albanian Minister expressed his Government’s interest in reducing food losses and waste in the country, especially in view of the growth of agricultural production.

“The only sector of economy growing currently is agriculture,” the Minister noted during the meeting.

He also highlighted the impact of an FAO land consolidation project and assured the Director-General that Albania is keen to scale up this activity throughout the country with funding from the national budget.
