Director-General José Graziano da Silva welcomes Indonesian delegation to FAO

FAO Director-General Jose' Graziano Da Silva meeting Helmy Zaini, Minister for Development of Disadvantaged Regions, Indonesia, FAO headquarters

7 May 2013, Rome, Italy - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva warmly welcomed an Indonesian delegation to FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy today.  

Helmy F. Zaini, Minister for the Development of Disadvantaged Regions, Republic of Indonesia, and the Director-General discussed the importance of a ‘blue economy’ and the priority FAO has placed on fisheries and aquaculture in several regions.

“Efforts to end hunger and fight the effects of climate change will hinge on the success of sustainable development, including the wise use of oceans and fisheries”, Graziano da Silva said.  He also noted that there can be no truly ‘green economy’ without a ‘blue economy’ based on the sustainable development of ocean and fishery resources.  

During this high-level meeting, Minister Zaini informed the Director-General that activities under his ministry were able to improve the incomes of the poor people who live in the disadvantaged areas from US$50/month to US$600/month. Graziano da Silva complimented Indonesia’s work in this area and pointed out that poverty reduction is one of FAO’s Strategic Objectives.  South-South Cooperation was identified as an opportunity where FAO and Indonesia can cooperate even closer on. 

Minister Zaini and Director-General Graziano da Silva also discussed FAO’s long history of facilitating development and cooperation in the region as well in responding to natural disasters, such as 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and Indonesian tsunami. In this regarding, Graziano da Silva highlighted FAO work and approach in emergencies, especially the Organization’s support to post disaster recovery.

Upon the close of the meeting, Minister Zaini and the Directory-General Graziano da Silva reiterated the importance of collaboration and continued efforts in the fight against hunger.
