Graziano da Silva and Elisabeth Atangana discussed support to farmers in entrepreneurship and commercialization
11 October 2013, Rome, Italy - FAO Director-General met Elisabeth Atangana and thanked her for her hard work with FAO as Ambassador for the International Year of Cooperatives in 2012.
Atangana, who is also the former president of the Pan African Farmers Forum (PAFFO) welcomed Director-General’s encouragements and underlined the importance of advocacy for support to farmers and their associations in African countries. She stressed the importance of “keeping farmers at the heart of the decisions of policy makers” and requested more support to farmers to be trained in issues such as policy analysis, decision making, entrepreneurship, commercialization and marketing. Graziano da Silva agreed that farmers need to also be trained on the use of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure.
Graziano da Silva and Atangana discussed the possibility of a more strategic partnership with the Pan African Farmers Forum and insisted in the importance of its involvement in the upcoming events of the International Year of Family Farming in 2014, including the regional meeting in South Africa.
