2013年3月20日,意大利罗马 - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva welcomed the Prime Minister of Tanzania, Mizengo Pinda, to Rome headquarters today. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of involving the private sector and other actors as key to continuing the country’s development through agriculture.

“Poverty is still a big issue in Tanzania, and we believe that agriculture is the answer to this problem,” Pinda said.

He explained that more than 80 percent of Tanzanians are dependent on agriculture to provide income and access to food and that the vast majority were subsistence farmers with a vast potential to better their lives through agriculture.

Da Silva and Pinda discussed the need to support farmers, for example by better integrating them into markets and helping them to form cooperatives and other business models. Pinda noted the need to increase investments in agriculture and that government investment alone is not enough.

Graziano da Silva agreed that the challenges of ending hunger and sustainably increasing agricultural production needed support not only from the private sector but also the wider spectrum of development partners, including civil society.
