Director-General meets with head of UN Volunteers
14 May 2013, Rome, Italy - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met today with Richard Dictus, Executive Director of the United Nations Volunteer Programme, a UN organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide.
Graziano da Silva and Dictus agreed to explore ways of improving and expanding collaboration. More than 7000 UN Volunteers work in some 132 countries worldwide, Dictus told Graziano da Silva. Dictus added that these volunteers hail from 169 different nations, with 87 percent coming from countries of the global South.
The FAO Director-General noted that the exchange of expertise, knowledge and resources that are the cornerstones of FAO’s South-South Cooperation initiative would be a natural entry-point for volunteerism. He also underlined that the recent approval by member countries of FAO’s strategy for partnering with civil society should allow FAO and UNV to improve and widen cooperation.
