19 June 2013, Rome – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva and Nicaraguan Vice-President Omar Halleslevens Acevedo concurred on the importance of promoting gender equity when they met at FAO headquarters today.
During the meeting the Vice-President noted that under Nicaraguan law, 50 percent of public posts must be filled by women. Women are also the main beneficiaries of family grants that help them carry on activities such as raising cows or pigs after the animals have been distributed free. The Minister also explained that his government has restored a school meals programme that had been sharply cut in the 80s and which now provides a balanced diet for 97% of the country's children.

The Director-General welcomed the Vice-President’s invitation to visit Nicaragua after the summer to observe the results of these programmes.
