FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva meeting with H.E. Sandor Fazekas, Hungary’s Minister for Rural Development. FAO Conference, 38th Session, FAO headquarters.

19 June 2013, Rome, Italy - Sandor Fazekas, Hungary’s Minister for Rural Development and FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva discussed preparations for next October’s Budapest Water Summit at a meeting here yesterday. The Director-General said he would like to take that opportunity to meet with leading Hungarian scholars and academics.

The Director-General expressed his support for an event which Hungary intends to organize in 2014 in the framework of the International Year of Family Farming – an exhibition of typical products grown by family farmers. Graziano da Silva suggested that this could serve as an occasion to produce a Hungarian version of FAO’s “Save and Grow” publication, which proposes a new, more sustainable model of agriculture.

Finally, the Minister described Hungary’s Potato Growing programme which distributes seed potatoes to families together with technical assistance to improve their crops, the only provision being that they give their communities one bag of potatoes after harvest. Graziano da Silva congratulated the Minister on the programme and expressed the hope that it could serve as an example to other countries in the region.
