Equatorial Guinea President meets with Director-General

Investing in agriculture to eradicate poverty

20 June 2013, Rome Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, met  with FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Agapito Mba Mokuy, the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Miguel Oyono Ndong Mifumu and Tamarite Crescentio Castaño, Minister of Fisheries and Environment.

President Obiang, who attending FAO’s governing Conference here, highlighted Equatorial Guinea’s excellent relations with FAO and noted that investments in agriculture and rural development can help eradicate poverty.  

The President also stressed the importance of fishing to Equatorial Guinea and Graziano da Silva told him that FAO is ready to implement a project on Marine Resources Assessment as soon as possible. An agreement was later signed on strengthening the FAO Office in Equatorial Guinea and President Obiang also attended a Conference Side Event on the new Africa Solidarity Trust Fund for food security which became a reality last February with a $30 million first donation from Equatorial Guinea, followed yesterday by the announcement of $10 million from Angola.
