8 October 2013, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva held a meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of El Salvador Pablo Ochoa Alcides at FAO headquarters today. The Director General noted the great progress made in the field of family farming in Central America and stressed especially the need to promote together with  the Agricultural Technology Centre (CENTA) of El Salvador the development of basic grain seeds.

Graziano da Silva also suggested the establishment of a mission coordinated by FAO with the purpose of responding to the challenges of coffee producers such as the coffee rust.

During the meeting, they also discussed the joint work of the National School of Agriculture (ENA) and FAO in support of ongoing projects to boost El Salvador’s raising and breeding of small animals. The possibility of FAO developing a risk analysis of the main chemicals in the country, and the option of co-financing a project on climate change adaptation, were other issues discussed at the meeting.
