Graziano da Silva congratulates South Africa on Defeat Hunger initiative

30 January 2014, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva congratulated President Jacob Zuma of South Africa on the country’s Fetsa Tlala (Defeat Hunger) Integrated Food Production Initiative when the two leaders met on the sidelines of the African Union Summit.

The initiative was approved by the South African Cabinet as the national food security programme with a target to plant at least one million hectares of land. The Director-General praised the government’s effort and congratulated Zuma on the good progress South Africa has made towards eradicating hunger.

Zuma thanked FAO for promoting food security in Africa and encouraging countries to achieve the first Millennium Development Goal hunger target.

The two principals discussed South Africa’s important role in the region, both as a major market for food products and as a supplier of services, industrial products and technical assistance. The Director-General praised the support South Africa gave to Lesotho for its food security initiative, along with FAO and WFP.

Zuma and Graziano da Silva also discussed the World Forestry Congress (WFC) that South Africa will co-host with FAO from 7 to 11 September 2015. This is the first World Forestry Congress organized on the African continent, and Da Silva thanked South Africa for its support.

Finally the two leaders discussed the reorganization of the fisheries sector, for which the Director-General underlined FAO’s support.
