Graziano da Silva meets with President of Zambia
30 January 2014, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met with Michael Chilufya Sata, President of Zambia, on the sidelines of the African Union Summit.
The leaders discussed the International Year of Family Farming, a special interest of Sata, and the Zambian President spoke of his wish for Zambia to become an example for the promotion of smallholder farmers.
Graziano da Silva and Sata discussed the reorganization of maize subsidies that tended to distort the market pricing mechanism of the staple food crop. Da Silva reassured the President of FAO’s full support for the implementation of the subsidies revision.
Sata said Zambia was now producing enough maize to export in the sub-region and show solidarity to its neighboring countries during times of crisis.
The two principals discussed youth employment and aquaculture as one way of absorbing the work force.
Sata invited the Director-General to visit Zambia.
