Graziano da Silva meets with Prime Minister of Ethiopia
31 January 2014, Addis Ababa, Ethopia - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva thanked Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn for the country’s long-standing cooperation and support for FAO’s work programme as the two leaders met on the sidelines of the African Union Summit.
Graziano da Silva congratulated Desalegn on his tenure and excellent work done as Chair of the African Union for the year 2013.
The two principals discussed the progress of the End Hunger in Africa Initiative that is now being implemented in Ethiopia in four regional states that have agreed to participate in the pilot phase. The Prime Minister reported on the excellent agricultural progress that his country has witnessed in recent years.
The Director-General reaffirmed FAO’s full support and announced that $2 million have been allocated by the Africa Solidarity Trust Fund to create job opportunities for young rural people in Ethiopia.
Desalegn reiterated his commitment following the visit to Ethiopia by the heads of the three Rome-based UN agencies and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, the UN Secretary-General's Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development, to further collaborate with FAO to promote inclusive finance and youth entrepreneurship as well as to improve the shelf life of agricultural produce and reduce food losses.
