Graziano da Silva meets Pakistan’s Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research
19 February 2014, Rome – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met with the Federal Minister of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research of Pakistan, Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan, at FAO headquarters today.
Graziano da Silva reaffirmed FAO’s support to the Government and the people of Pakistan, a country where FAO has about 240 staff based in over 20 offices throughout the territory.
He also congratulated the Minister on assuming his responsibility as the new National Federal Minister for Food Security and Research in May 2013.
At the meeting, the Director-General expressed his interest in the recent decentralization process that the agriculture sector in Pakistan has undergone, resulting in the transfer of all agriculture responsibilities to the country’s provinces while the federal government retains the responsibility of coordinating research and food security.
FAO’s Pakistan programme being one of the Organization’s largest in the world, Graziano da Silva and the Minister discussed mutual collaboration and priority areas for FAO support. Among other issues, the Minister mentioned insufficient water resources as a problem that the country faces and requested FAO support in policy advice for their National Food Security policy.
