19 February 2014, Rome – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arab Authority for Agricultural Investment and Development (AAAID) Mohamed Bin Obaid Al-Mazrouei at FAO headquarters today.

Established in 1976, the AAAID is a financial institution based in Khartoum, Republic of Sudan, and with a regional office in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Bin Obaid Al-Mazrouei informed Graziano da Silva about the upcoming establishment of a Food Security Observatory in the Arab countries and requested FAO’s technical assistance.

“We can benefit from FAO’s long experience in many different areas,” the Chairman said. “We share the same objectives, so we have to coordinate and cooperate with each other.”

The two leaders also discussed the potential for enhanced cooperation with the FAO Investment Centre as the Arab Authority is conducting a number of feasibility studies in Arab countries.

The AAAID is working to achieve food security through programs and activities that aim to maximize production and productivity in the agricultural sector. “Our objective is to ensure what we consider the five essential foods for people to survive: grain, sugar, oil, meat and milk,” the Chairman explained.

This is achieved by supporting income-generating activities by financing small producers through revolving small loans and the provision of production services in targeted communities.

The Arab Authority is also carrying out a number of development programs to initiate agricultural, social and environmental development for small farmers in member states:  “We want to help small farmers to start and develop their farms and to allow technology transfer to help them grow”, he added.

In that respect, the Chairman explained that the AAAID is establishing experimental farms in some Arab countries to disseminate new farming techniques and requested FAO’s support in this field.
