19 February 2014, Rome – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met the State Minister for Finance of Bangladesh, M.A. Mannan, at FAO headquarters today.

The head of FAO noted that Bangladesh was one of the 38 countries from all regions in the world awarded by FAO in 2013 for having made outstanding progress in the fight against hunger, having met the Millennium Development Goal target for halving the proportion of chronically undernourished people since 1990 before the target date of 2015.

Graziano da Silva congratulated Minister Mannan on Bangladesh’s achievement in rice production, noting that the country had begun exporting part of its crop on the international market.

The Director-General also voiced his welcome for the new “One House, One Farm” policy, saying it was in keeping with the spirit of the International Year of Family Farming 2014, an FAO-led, UN initiative designed to support the more than 500 million family farmers who play a key role in global food security, economic development and environmental sustainability. A presentation on this project was held at FAO headquarters following the Minister's visit.

Graziano da Silva and Minister Mannan also discussed the approval of the Bangladesh Food Safety Act last October.
