Meeting with Mauritania’s Minister for Rural Development
28 February 2014, Rome – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met with Mauritania’s Minister of Rural Development Brahim Ould Mohamed El Moctar Ould M'Mbareck, at FAO headquarters today.
Graziano da Silva thanked the Minister for the warm welcome received during his last visit to Nouakchott in October 2013.
“I have congratulated the FAO Director-General for the excellent organization, the topic selection and the high quality discussions of the Regional Conference for countries in the Near East and North Africa,” the Minister highlighted after the meeting.
“Mauritania welcomes the initiatives related to water scarcity and family farming discussed at the regional conference and the impact that they can have in the region,” he said. “We should all work at increasing our technical expertise and developing very accurate indicators”.
“We have reviewed the preparatory activities undertaken for the creation of a camel breeding center”, the Minister explained. “We are very satisfied because since Graziano da Silva’s visit to Mauritania last October the preparations for this 5-year project that will be funded by Mauritania with FAO’s accompanying Technical Cooperation Programme have been accelerated and we hope to sign it very soon”, he added.
The Minister also underscored the importance of FAO reinforcing technical competencies in the country, notably in the pastoralist sector.
