Graziano da Silva with Vice Minister Gulmira Issayeva.

1 April 20014, Bucharest, Romania -  FAO and Kazakhstan agreed today to step up their collaboration in a number of areas including, among others, animal health, food safety, nutrition and agricultural development in the country.

Meeting on the sidelines of the FAO Regional Conference for Europe, the Organization’s Director-General, José Graziano da Silva, and Vice Minister Gulmira Issayeva, Head of the Kazakh delegation to the FAO Regional Conference, signed a letter of intent.

Kazakhstan is one of the higher income member countries in Central Asia that have requested a stronger in-country presence of FAO and an expansion of activities through more partnership and new funding arrangements.

Under the new agreement, FAO will establish a Partnership and Liaison Office in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana. The main objective of the office will be to develop a partnership programme with Kazakhstan to implement technical cooperation projects in the different areas covered by FAO’s mandate. The two parties will work together to finalize the arrangement and will sign a binding agreement as soon as possible.
