FAO Director-General co-chairs the second Sub-Saharan and Argentinean Agriculture Ministers Meeting

20 August 2013, Buenos Aires/Rome - FAO Director General José Graziano da Silva highlighted the potential of South-South Cooperation and reiterated FAO's commitment "to strengthen and channel exchanges between Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa with the aim to adopt, adapt and broaden best practices that promote agricultural development."

Graziano da Silva's comments came during the second Sub-Saharan and Argentinean Agriculture Ministers Meeting in Buenos Aires (20-23 August),

Countries celebrate 50th anniversary of Codex Alimentarius

2 July 2013, Rome - As Codex Alimentarius, the world's top food standard body for consumer protection and fair practices in international food trade, celebrated its 50th anniversary, the FAO and WHO Directors-General and national governments united in their praise for its benefits.

"Today, Codex standards are the benchmark standards for food safety. There is no competition," Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, told the Codex Alimentarius

2 July 2013, Rome, Italy - A week ago, U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization member states agreed on the agency’s 2014-2015 budget and a new strategic framework, objectives and work program for the next few years. 

Before and during FAO’s week-long biannual conference in Rome, the European Union had expressed concerns about the financial health of the organization, and asked for more transparency in its decentralization process.

High-level Meeting adopts Declaration for unified and focused action by all to end hunger and malnutrition by 2025

Addis-Ababa, 1 July 2013 - Heads of State and Government of African Union Member States, together with representatives of international organizations, civil society organizations, private sector, cooperatives, farmers, youths, academia and other partners have unanimously adopted a Declaration to end hunger in Africa by 2025.

The declaration calls for a combination of policies to promote sustainable agricultural development with social protection, for a budgetary allocation
